Open burning, open detonation and demilitarization of surplus ammunition
Demilitarization covers all processes that make weapons, ammunition and explosives unfit for their original military purpose, from dismantling and recycling to destruction. Open burning and open detonation (OBOD), sometimes called open destruction, are the field methods most often used to destroy surplus, obsolete or unserviceable ammunition and explosive ordnance where industrial facilities are not available. GEODE plans, supervises and quality-manages destruction programmes, and the DEMINETEC Group delivers neutralisation and destruction operations.
The choice between OBOD and industrial demilitarization depends on the type and condition of the ammunition, quantities, transport risks, available sites, safety distances, environmental constraints and budget. Open burning is generally used for propellants and some pyrotechnics; open detonation for high-explosive ammunition and items that cannot be moved safely. Every operation must be planned with safety distances, site preparation, weather limits, donor charges and post-destruction search.

GEODE has been part of the DEMINETEC Group since 2022. DEMINETEC neutralises and destroys munitions on site or in a furnace, including destruction with mitigation measures in urban environments (DEMINETEC UXO clearance). The group's international references cover more than 30 countries on five continents (DEMINETEC Group international references).
OBOD means open burning and open detonation: the destruction of ammunition and explosives in the open, by burning or by detonation, on a prepared demolition site. It is sometimes called open destruction.
Demilitarization is the complete range of processes that render weapons, ammunition and explosives unfit for their originally intended purpose, including dismantling, recycling and destruction (IATG 10.10).
IMAS 11.20 sets out principles and procedures for open burning and open detonation operations; IATG 10.10 covers demilitarization, destruction and logistic disposal of conventional ammunition.
